This two-part seminar, covering both beginning and advanced topics in Naturalization, Citizenship, and Voting Law, is designed for attorneys, paralegals, educators, social service providers, organizers, and other advocates. The morning session is for those who work with immigrants and are seeking an in-depth introduction to naturalization. Topics include: the basics of naturalization; the legal requirements for naturalization, such as residence and physical presence; good moral character; the English and U.S. history and civics exams; the oath ceremony; and the naturalization process. In the afternoon, we will review the complex, yet important, issues involving citizenship for children, reviewing acquisition and derivation of citizenship and INA § 322 citizenship for children. We will also concentrate on how to interpret the ILRC's easy-to-read charts, which spell out eligibility for acquisition and derivation. In addition, we will review the importance of voting, key laws on voting, and how to encourage naturalized citizens to vote. Amagda Pérez, Executive Director of the California Rural Legal Assistance Foundation (CRLAF) and faculty member of the UC Davis School of Law. She served as the Supervising Attorney of the UC Davis Immigration Law Clinic from 1994 to 2007, and currently serves as the Immigration Clinic Director. She also directs CRLAF’s California Rural Citizenship Campaign and assists thousand of rural immigrants to apply for and obtain U.S. citizenship.
