9/15/08 (1:00 pm - 5:00 pm): We will discuss the basics of naturalization: the legal requirements for naturalization, such as residence and physical presence; good moral character; the English and U.S. history and civics exams; the oath ceremony; the naturalization process; and voting issues. 9/16/08 (9:00 am - 5:00 pm): The Day 2 is designed for attorneys and others who have experience and knowledge helping people apply for naturalization and are familiar with naturalization requirements and procedures. We will cover some of the more complex aspects of naturalization and citizenship, including advanced good moral character issues; a thorough review of citizenship for children issues; and a review of voting for naturalized citizens. * Morning session: We will cover the complex issues involving citizenship for children. We will review acquisition and derivation of citizenship, as well as INA §322 citizenship for children. We will concentrate on how to interpret the ILRC's easy to read charts, which spell out eligibility for acquisition and derivation and will walk through examples of each kind of citizenship for children. * Afternoon session: We will cover various topics in good moral character. During this discussion, we will delve into the reasons why some naturalization applicants could be deportable, and how failure to register for the selective service, failure to pay child support, failure to file income taxes, and other issues affect one's naturalization application. Additionally, we will review how different criminal convictions can affect one's naturalization application. This will be an interactive session during which we will do some hypothetical cases involving good moral character problems. Instructor: Eric Cohen, ILRC Executive Director and expert on U.S. Naturalization and Citizenship topics. He is the author of ILRC publication, Naturalization and U.S. Citizenship: The Essential Legal Guide. Co-sponsored by ILRC and Central California Legal Services Deadline to register: 9/8/08 To register, visit www.ilrc.org/seminars NOTE: This training is offered for free to staff members of non-profit and IOLTA organizations.
