Bay Area Legal Aid is the largest legal services provider in the San Francisco Bay Area, serving clients in Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Mateo, San Francisco and Santa Clara counties. We represent clients who have legal problems related to housing, family law, domestic violence, access to healthcare, and public benefits. Our attorneys represent clients in state and federal courts and in administrative hearings. We provide legal counsel, advice, and other civil legal assistance to eligible low-income clients and client groups.
What positions are available? Our Alameda Office is seeking an advocate to join its health access team based in Oakland, California. The Contra Costa Office, located in Richmond, is seeking an attorney or advocate to join its Public Benefits Unit. Both positions involve significant community outreach. The successful applicants will educate service providers and potential clients about health access issues, health maintenance organizations and BayLegal's services. They will also assist our clients in obtaining Medi-Cal, Healthy Families, Medicare and other low cost health insurance, and help them to resolve issues around medical debt.
Alameda (Advocate): Bilingual skills are required for the position in our Alameda Regional Office. For this position, we are looking for an Advocate who can speak Spanish, Cantonese, Vietnamese, Mandarin, Cambodian, Farsi or another commonly used language in Alameda County.
Contra Costa (Attorney/Advocate): Our Contra Costa Regional Office is looking for an Attorney or Advocate who has a driver's license and access to a car. Bilingual skills in Spanish or Asian languages are preferred for the position in this office.
For both positions, we are looking for individuals with strong advocacy, writing, analytical, negotiation and organization skills. In addition, there will be opportunities to collaborate with other legal services and health service providers to identify systemic health issues in need of redress. Preference will be given to applicants with demonstrated health law experience. Familiarity with California and federal public benefits programs including CalWORKS, Medi-Cal, Healthy Families, Food Stamps, and Social Security/SSI is helpful. We encourage applicants who will contribute to our diversity.
What are our compensation and benefits? Compensation is based upon experience. Bay Area Legal Aid provides a generous benefits package that includes: medical and dental insurance, law school loan repayment assistance; bilingual stipend; and 401(k) retirement account.
