FAIR HOUSING LAW PROJECT
STAFF ATTORNEY

Program Description
Fair Housing Law Project (FHLP) is one of five programs of the Law Foundation of Silicon Valley. FHLP provides free legal services to individuals who experience illegal discrimination in acquiring or maintaining housing. FHLP currently has 20 cases in active litigation. FHLP staff consists of five attorneys and two legal assistant/outreach coordinators. The Law Foundation offers a fun and dynamic working environment.
Job Duties
The Staff Attorney will divide time between fair housing and predatory lending cases. The attorney will provide legal representation, including litigation, to individuals who have been discriminated against in housing (including lending); providing community education on fair housing and predatory lending issues; producing educational materials on fair housing and lending issues; conducting legal screenings for potential predatory lending victims; assisting the client population in system reform efforts concerning discrimination in housing and lending; and coordinating with the work of the other FHLP attorneys and legal assistants and pro bono firm co-counsel.
Other duties include supervising interns, providing technical assistance to Law Foundation staff, participating in general office upkeep duties, keeping statistics, writing contract reports, and maintaining positive working relationships with community partners, co-counsel, and local and statewide coalitions.
Desired Qualifications
• Bilingual Spanish speaker - preferred
• Demonstrated commitment to civil rights, particularly in housing
• Knowledge of home mortgage processes and laws
• One to five years experience in the practice of law, preferably in the area of civil litigation
• Member of the State Bar of California - required
• California Driver's License
• Ability to identify, investigate, and resolve client problems
• Ability to work productively with individuals from diverse backgrounds
• Excellent public speaking, interpersonal, and writing skills
Salary: $47,538-$54,508 DOE and excellent benefits: health care, dental, 401(k) with 4% match after first year, long-term disability, generous vacation and holidays, parking, and union membership.
