JOB ANNOUNCEMENT
PROJECT COORDINATOR: HEALTH CONSUMER CENTER
Full-Time Permanent Position (Job Share Possible)

Position: Project Coordinator, Health Consumer Center, Legal Aid Society of San Mateo County

Location: San Mateo County, California (San Francisco Bay Area and Peninsula)

Project Description: The Health Consumer Center of San Mateo County helps resolve legal problems related to health care access for low-income people. The HCC is affiliated with the Health Consumer Alliance (HCA), a statewide partnership of consumer assistance programs. For background information, please go to www.healthconsumer.org.
Responsibilities:

1) Client screening, scheduling, and follow up. Under the supervision of the Directing Attorney, the Project Coordinator screens individuals who call Legal Aid with a health-care
related legal problem; schedules appointments or provides appropriate referrals; collects data on all client-related activities; follows up with clients in ongoing cases; and follows up with clients to document outcomes after cases are closed.

2) Database entry, coding, and reports. The Project Coordinator is responsible for maintaining a confidential client database, entering and coding all HCC cases in the database, and generating client and outreach data reports for funders or internal purposes.

3) Community outreach and trainings. The Project Coordinator coordinates HCC outreach, keeps a calendar of events, and maintains contact with community organizations to promote HCC and ensure dissemination of HCC materials. The Project Coordinator represents the HCC at health fairs and meetings, including occasionally on weekends and in the evenings. S/he will also develop and conduct trainings in the community about the HCC and specific topics (such as managed care appeal rights, immigrant rights to health services, etc.). Some travel throughout the county is required.

4) Writing. The Project Coordinator assists in drafting funding proposals and grant reports; updates and drafts HCC brochures and educational materials, as needed; and identifies compelling client stories to write up for reports or newsletters.

5) Oversight Committee. The Project Coordinator has primary responsibility for the HCC's Oversight Committee, and recruits qualified individuals to serve on the committee. S/he also organizes and runs Oversight Committee meetings, prepares and disseminates meeting materials, and takes minutes.

6) Translation and interpretation. The Project Coordinator interprets for non-Spanish speaking staff attorneys during client interviews and phone calls, and translates legal client
correspondence into Spanish.

7) Administrative Support. The Project Coordinator prepares client files and correspondence, and assists staff attorneys with miscellaneous administrative tasks, as needed.

8) Special Projects. As needed, the Project Coordinator has primary responsibility for discrete projects that fall within the scope of the HCC's work.

Organization: The Legal Aid Society of San Mateo County (www.legalaidsmc.org) is a nonprofit law firm that has been providing free legal services to people who cannot afford an attorney. We have been in existence since 1959 and are preparing to celebrate our 50th anniversary. Our attorneys represent people in the areas of elder law; housing; family law and domestic violence; government benefits; health and mental health; and special education access and disability rights.

Required Qualifications:
We are looking for a highly motivated, energetic, self-starter who cares about health care access and wants to work with a diverse, low-income client population. The right candidate is someone who can juggle multiple responsibilities, work quickly and efficiently, and set up systems to organize large amounts of data. He or she will be comfortable taking a leadership role on projects and ensure their timely completion, but will also enjoy supporting the staff attorneys' work. Other
requirements include:
-Bachelors Degree
-Spanish proficiency (oral and written)
-Excellent writing and communication skills
-Proficient user of computer technology
-Demonstrated organizational skills and attention to detail
-Demonstrated ability to take initiative and work autonomously

Preferred:
-An understanding of the health care system and/or government health care programs (Medi-Cal,
Healthy Families, Medicare, etc.)
-Experience with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, and -Access databases
