GIS Advisory Board and Update

Thursday, April 20, 2006

  • Organization: Legal Services National Technology Assistance Project
Hi Techies, Directors, and Managers,

I wanted to invite your participation in a GIS Advisory Board and give a quick update on what is going on nationally with GIS mapping. I invite you to participate in the Adv Board if you want to use mapping in your program. We need participation from managers, advocates, and techies. We want to make this project useful for our work as legal aid advocates. That success will be in large part up to your participation.

Advisory Board
For the Advisory Board, the commitment will not be great (mostly email input on things, with one to three calls between now and December). The Advisory Board is needed to discuss several things, some of which are technical, some of which are programmatic. Topics for discussion include: what kind of data you want to see, what are the top ten maps, data uploading issues, and specifications for interacting with case management systems.

Update on the GIS Mapping Project
The Legal Aid of East Tennessee (LAET) received a Technology Initiative Grant (TIG) from LSC this year to implement a nationally-hosting mapping system that would enable LSC-funded programs to easily create maps without having to be expert at mapping software. LAET has partnered with NTAP to manage and implement this grant.

We are working with the University of Tennessee Geography Department on this project initially. Their job, under the direction of Dr. Bruce Ralston, is to take U.S. Census data and organize it by the service area of each LSC-funded program. Ultimately, when they are done, each legal aid program will be able to generate "Top 10" maps about poverty in their service area AND upload their case management data to a national server to generate maps specific to your statistics. NTAP will offer training on how to upload the data and use the system. We've taken a look at other similar projects Dr. Ralston has completed and it is exciting and user-friendly. The timeline for his completion is later this summer.

If you are interested in participating, please let me know. Much appreciated.

Gabrielle
