Monday, June 12, 2006

  • Organization: Legal Aid Association of California

Each year, LAAC invites law students working with LAAC member legal services programs during the summer to apply for funding through its Dan Bradley Summer Fellowship Program. The applicant pool was extremely competitive this year, but the selection committee was particularly impressed by the qualifications and commitment of six individuals.

The 2006 LAAC Dan Bradley Fellows:

Amanda Newell is a 2L at the UC Davis School of Law. This summer she will be working at California Rural Legal Assistance's Modesto office. Amanda will provide direct services to clients, compile a resource library of sample letters that tenants can use when corresponding with their landlords, and research whether legal services attorneys may seek attorney's fees in unlawful detainer cases.

Karma Quick is a 1L at New College of California School of Law. She will be working at the Disability Rights Education and Defense Fund in Berkeley. Karma will research and draft briefs, educate parents of disabled children on their rights under the Individuals with Disabilities in Education Act, and attend court hearings, dispositions, and mediations.

Caryn Crosthwait is a 2L at the UC Davis School of Law. During her summer at California Rural Legal Assistance Foundation, she will work on an outreach project to rural immigrant communities to respond to questions regarding their legal rights and how the proposed immigration legislation in Congress will affect their access to employment, education, health, and the legal system.

Kirushanthy Balachanthiran is a 2L at the UC Davis School of Law. This summer at Protection and Advocacy, Inc. she will conduct client intake and legal research, as well as draft opinion letters and legal memos relating to major disability-related cases. Her particular areas of concentration will be anti-discrimination, and personal autonomy and conservatorship issues relating to disability claims.

Kathryn Snyder is a 1L at the University of San Diego School of Law. This summer she will be working at the San Diego Volunteer Lawyer Program's EDLaw Project. She will work alongside staff attorneys to provide for the needs of disadvantaged children by advocating for children's educational rights. Kathryn will have a particular focus on serving children in the foster care system.

Jennifer Phan is a 2L at the UC Davis School of Law. She will be a summer law clerk at Public Counsel's Consumer Law Project. Jennifer will advocate for debtors in need by interviewing clients and assessing whether or not bankruptcy is appropriate, preparing Chapter 7 petitions and schedules, conducting legal research and writing on issues of first impression under the new bankruptcy law, and engaging in community outreach to educate clients about the bankruptcy court process.
