UC Hastings College of the Law is excited to announce the Ralph Santiago Abascal Fellowship for the 2007-2008 Academic year. Of real note is the that the award has been increased from $25,000 to 40,000.

We hope you will consider partnering with Hastings students and graduates in developing and submitting a fellowship application.

The Abascal Fellowship will fund a Hastings graduate (Classes of 2001- 2007) to work in the areas of legal advocacy, community education, and policy change for clients denied access to the legal system.

The program looks to fund work that is either innovative or has previously proven to be effective and preference will be given to projects that serve geographic areas that experience persistent difficulties attracting public interest attorneys, such as rural locations and poor communities. Because the goal is to create new public interest positions and give fellows the opportunity to exercise leadership on discrete projects, the Abascal Fellowship will not fund a general staff attorney position within an existing organization.

Fellowship applications will entail identifying a host organization and submitting a project proposal. Applications will be available August 15,

2006 and will be due at noon on November 1, 2006. The application is available online at:
