Urge Members to Oppose the Inhofe "English-only" Amendment to the Comprehensive Immigration Reform Bill - It Hurts our Families and Communities!
Call your Senators to urge their opposition!
Senator Inhofe has introduced an amendment to the current immigration bill being considered by the Senate that would declare English the national language and restrict the ability of the government to communicate effectively with American citizens, immigrants, and visitors.
The amendment would undercut public health and safety messages that are intended to protect all Americans. The Inhofe amendment could make it more difficult for agencies like FEMA and Centers for Disease Control to respond to a flu pandemic, another Katrina disaster, or another terrorist attack. If some portion of the community does not receive information that it can understand about immunizations or other health threats, the entire public is at risk.
There is already language in the current immigration bill which states that English is the common language of the United States. Senator Inhofe's amendment shows that he wants to go beyond acknowledging the commonalities of language amongst all Americans, and that he wants to chip away at the government's ability to provide equal access to its services and programs for all Americans.
The Inhofe Amendment divides rather than unites our nation.
Please contact your Senators and urge them to oppose the Inhofe amendment.
