On July 25, Senate Republicans released a series of proposals aimed at cutting 2007-08 state spending. There are no new ways to close a budget gap and California Budget Project (CBP) publications have previously examined several of the Senate Republican proposals. Senate Republicans propose to:
- Adopt the Governor's January budget proposal to deny cash assistance to certain children in the CalWORKs Program. To read more, go to www.cbp.org/pdfs/2007/0703_bb_calworks.pdf.
- Eliminate some 6,000 vacant positions in state government. This proposal is a perennial favorite that has proven to offer less than initially meets the eye. A 2002 CBP Brief examined this issue and whether eliminating vacancies would, in fact, help balance the budget. To read more, go to www.cbp.org/pdfs/2002/020501Vacancies.pdf.
- Implement the federal Deficit Reduction Act of 2005's requirements that citizens under the age of 18 provide documentation of their citizenship status for family planning services. To read more go to www.cbp.org/pdfs/2006/0605_bb_citdocumentation.pdf.
