Demographic Shifts Will Shape California's Future

A new California Budget Project report, Planning for California's Future: The State's Population Is Growing, Aging, and Becoming More Diverse, looks at the demographic changes that are likely to affect demands on state and local budgets. Between 2000 and 2020, California is projected to add approximately 10 million people, roughly equivalent to the population of the state of Michigan. Whites' share of the state's population is expected to shrink, while the shares of Latinos and Asians are expected to increase, and the number of Californians age 65 or older is projected to rise.
