Subject: Transcript Reimbursement Fund saved

Senate Business & Professions took action today rejecting the Governor's proposal to eliminate the Ct Reporters Bd, thereby saving the Transcript Reimbursement Fund. Protection & Advocacy, Public Interest Law Firm (San Jose) and Public Advocates testified specifically on the importance of the Transcript Reimbursement Fund. The Ct Reporters Bd and various court reporters' associations testified on the Board's efficiency and importance to access to justice. Judicial Council testified against the idea of moving the function of overseeing the court reporters to the Judicial Council (as recommended by staff). Sen. Corbett made an alternative motion to reject the Gov's proposal to eliminate the Ct Reporters Bd. Final vote on call: 7-2.
