New Williams v. California Education Resource

Thursday, June 25, 2009

We are pleased to share with you Public Advocates' latest publication,
Your Schools, Your Rights, Your Power: A Grassroots Guide to Effective
Williams Campaigns.  Link to publication: www.publicadvocates.org/williams/docs/Your_Schools,Your_Rights,Your_Power.pdf

Part "how to" guide, part inspiration, Your Schools, Your Rights, Your
Power tells the story of how grassroots groups across California have
successfully used the complaint process resulting from the Williams v.
California settlement to enforce their hard-won new legal rights. In
doing so, California students and parents have won tangible improvements
in their schools and, at the same time, built a stronger grassroots base
of effective education advocates. Here they share the lessons they have
learned along the way, marking a path for other grassroots organizations
to follow as they organize to improve their schools.

To supplement the guide, we have created a web page explaining more
about the Williams settlement and containing valuable resources to
support others in forming their own Williams campaigns. See
http://www.publicadvocates.org/williams/

On behalf of the courageous Williams plaintiffs and the committed
students and parents who have translated the legal rights won under
Williams into meaningful change in their schools, we urge you to read
Your Schools, Your Rights, Your Power, consider its lessons for shaping
powerful local school campaigns and building grassroots power, and share
with us your feedback and experiences.
