The National Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Bar Association and the National Center for Lesbian Rights are
proud to announce the inception of the Family Law
Institute http://email.southernwebgroup.com/t/r/l/iyykb/tjjutril/t, a new joint initiative. The 2009 Family Law Institute will be a full day event on September 10, 2009 in Brooklyn, New York.
The purpose of the meeting is to enable experienced LGBT family law practitioners to share collective wisdom and to discuss cutting-edge legal strategies for representing members of the LGBT community.
In order to create an environment where there can be a free flow of
information, registration is limited to 75 participants whose work
history qualifies them as seasoned attorneys. The meeting will be closed and there will be no recorded proceedings.
The program, as presently scheduled, will include the following subjects:
Family creation, surrogacy from the clients' perspective, ethics,
interaction of psychology and the law, collaborative law, transgender
issues, dissolution of relationships, and elder law. In addition, there will be a session where participants can bring a difficult legal issue in their practice and solicit input from other lawyers.
These sessions will not be lectures, but rather are being structured to
encourage participation from everyone in attendance. The discussion leaders are from more than 15 different states, both those that recognize same-sex relationships and those that do not. Further, the Family Law Institute will give participants an opportunity to network with lawyers from other states in order to build a cadre of family law practitioners throughout the country.
To help guarantee that the level of discourse remains at a high level, and to ensure that all participants are able to contribute meaningfully to the conversation, we are asking that interested parties submit their information on the following application:
Family Law Institute Application https://web.memberclicks.com/mc/quickForm/viewForm.do?orgId=nlgla&formId=60824
Applicants will be selected based on their experience with LGBT family creation, protection and dissolution. Applicants should have familiarity with these issues and may be asked to provide evidence describing their familiarity with LGBT family law.
The cost to attend the Family Law Institute is $100, which includes
registration to attend the rest of the 2009 Annual Career Fair and
Conference on September 11-12th.
