SAN FRANCISCO – The Legal Aid Association of California is proud to announce that Executive Director, Julia R. Wilson, was chosen by the California Lawyer Magazine as a California Lawyer of the Year in 2009.

Ms. Wilson, along with Kevin Baker of the Assembly Judiciary Committee, Assemblymember Mike Feuer, and Thomas R. McMorrow, aided by Fred L. Main and Michael Martinez, both of Manatt, Phelps & Phillips LLP were recognized in the Legislative category for their efforts to pass AB 590.

Ms. Wilson says, “It is an honor to receive this award for LAAC’s part in this outstanding collaboration, with Assemblymember Feuer and Mr. Baker’s leadership and Manatt’s pro bono support. It was a privilege to serve as the voice of the true heroes in this story – the almost 100 legal services nonprofits in California that do this life-changing work on a daily basis.”

Funded by an approved $10 increase in court fees, AB 590 authorizes the launch of a pilot project in 2011 to ensure that those living at 200% above the federal poverty guidelines or less will be eligible for expanded representation in civil court matters involving basic life necessities.

The Legal Aid Association of California (LAAC), the statewide membership organization of legal services nonprofits, serves and strengthens its members through advocacy, training, and support in their efforts to provide critical legal assistance to low-income Californians and ensure equal access to justice.
